Can Seniors Get Life Insurance With Health Problems?

February 05, 20263 min read

The Biggest Myth in Senior Life Insurance

Here’s what most seniors believe: if you have health problems, you can’t get life insurance. This belief stops thousands of seniors from ever picking up the phone to ask about coverage — and it’s simply not true.

The reality is that most common health conditions do not disqualify seniors from final expense insurance. In fact, getting coverage with pre-existing conditions is something we help clients navigate every single day.

Health Conditions That Typically Still Qualify

The following conditions are commonly found among our applicants — and most still qualify for level benefit (immediate coverage) plans:

Cardiovascular

  • High blood pressure (controlled with medication)
  • Atrial fibrillation (AFib) — depending on stability and recency
  • Prior heart attack — many carriers approve if it was 2+ years ago
  • Pacemaker or stent — case by case

Metabolic & Endocrine

  • Type 2 diabetes (most carriers accept, especially if controlled with oral medication)
  • Obesity or high BMI
  • Thyroid conditions

Respiratory

  • COPD (mild to moderate)
  • Asthma (controlled)
  • Sleep apnea (with or without CPAP)

Other Common Conditions

  • Arthritis (any type)
  • Kidney disease (non-dialysis)
  • Depression or anxiety (stable, managed)
  • History of cancer — many carriers approve if in remission for 2–5 years depending on type
  • Neuropathy
  • Osteoporosis

Conditions That May Require a Graded Benefit Plan

Some conditions make it harder — but not impossible — to get coverage. These may result in a graded benefit (2-year waiting period) plan rather than immediate coverage:

  • Insulin-dependent diabetes diagnosed before age 40 (some carriers)
  • Recent heart attack or stroke (within past 12–24 months)
  • Active cancer treatment
  • Organ transplant
  • Currently on dialysis
  • Recent hospitalization for certain conditions

Even with these conditions, coverage is still available. A graded plan still locks in your rate, still builds cash value, and still pays your family the full benefit after two years.

What About Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance?

For seniors who cannot qualify for any underwritten plan, guaranteed issue whole life insurance is available. This type of policy:

  • Accepts everyone — no health questions, no medical exam
  • Is available up to age 85 with most carriers
  • Always has a 2-year waiting period — this is standard for guaranteed issue products
  • Provides smaller coverage amounts, typically $5,000–$25,000
  • Premiums are higher than underwritten plans

Guaranteed issue is a last resort, but it means no senior is ever completely uninsurable. AIG/Corebridge, one of our 9 carriers, offers strong guaranteed issue products for clients who need them.

How to Find the Right Carrier for Your Health Profile

This is where working with an independent broker makes a significant difference. Different carriers have different underwriting guidelines for the same condition. For example:

  • One carrier may decline a diabetic who takes insulin
  • Another carrier may approve the same person for a level benefit plan
  • A third carrier may offer the best premium for that specific health profile

We know which carriers are most favorable for which health conditions — and we match you with the right one from day one, rather than having you apply, get declined, and start over.
